June 2019 will see Adoption Focus celebrating 10 years as an adoption agency. In that time we have placed nearly 400 vulnerable children from all backgrounds with loving, adoptive families and provided them with all the support they’ve needed.

Adoption Focus was formed in 2009, having previously delivered the adoption service within Father Hudson’s Society. Initially, Adoption Focus shared premises with Father Hudson’s, a long-established charity based in the West Midlands, before moving its head office to its present location in Marston Green, Birmingham in 2013. We also have sub-offices in Staffordshire and Oxfordshire, allowing us to provide our services to a large proportion of central England.

Since launching, our staff team has grown from 12 employees to 32. This means we have more social workers engaging with more potential adopters to provide homes for children who need them and more support staff to assist with training, assessment, recruitment, family finding and administration. This expansion has allowed us to increase the number of adopters we’ve approved from seven in our first year of operation to 45 in the last year.

We now have a dedicated adoption support team offering practical help and advice to our families whenever it’s needed. This support begins from the moment people enter our adoption process and lasts a lifetime. The report from our last Ofsted inspection in 2018 said “The ongoing support and training provided make this agency a leader in providing adoption and support services”. That’s one of the reasons that our agency has been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted every time we’ve been inspected.

Last year Adoption Focus launched the Triangle Project, to offer early permanence placements so children can be placed with foster carers who are already approved to adopt them. This initiative – a partnership with St Francis’ Children’s Society in Milton Keynes – allows us to provide an alternative, child-friendly route to adoption which reduces the number of moves experienced by vulnerable children in the care system.

Adoption Focus CEO, Anna Sharkey said:

“We’re delighted to be celebrating our landmark, 10th anniversary this summer. We’re extremely proud of the work that we do, helping to provide safe, caring, well-prepared homes for children who have experienced a difficult start in life. Over the years, we’ve seen hundreds of families that we’ve worked with growing and thriving. This is why we do what we do and is a testament to our dedicated staff team, our trustees, volunteers and, above all, our marvellous adopters.”
